Hello, I'm Riz Ahmad. Welcome to my page! I'm a psychiatrist by profession stemming from a neverending intrigue about peoples’ stories. Originally from Long Island, New York, I grew up in a Pakistani-American family of more than seventy first degree relatives where every weekend was a celebration and a chance to people-watch. After graduating from Penn State University’s business school and moving up the ladder in IBM as a management consultant I realized the best use of my interpersonal skills and problem solving skills would be to care for individuals. I switched from globetrotting to planting myself down firmly among medical school books.
After graduating from The Medical College of Georgia I was fortunate to train in Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, one of the nation's top psychiatry programs. I was groomed in not only the science of psychiatry but also the fine art of practicing it. Along the way I found a darling wife who gifted me three lovely daughters. I currently reside in Dallas where I do contract work while developing my private telepsychiatry practice. I am known for bringing an unassuming familiarity in my inquisitions with people and aim to be a resource to anyone with whom I cross paths. I look forward to getting to know you as well.

“The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled.” Plutarch
After completing an internship year in Anesthesiology at the University of Illinois, I made a serendipitous switch to Psychiatry and never looked back. Although I trained in and enjoyed all areas of psychiatry, I felt most at home in the emergency room and addiction medicine clinic.
I completed the first two basic sciences year on the main campus Augusta, GA. Afterwards I was accepted for a pilot program to complete my clinical rotations in beautiful Savannah, GA under the 1:1 guidance of private physicians minus the scutwork of academic institutions.
I briefly explored real estate finance and development, got a taste of Manhattan life, and luckily opted to not pursue a career finance just before the 2008 subprime mortgage meltdown.
Besides maintaining a 4.0 GPA in my major, I immersed myself in a constellation of activities such as karate, a Bollywood dancing troupe, a fraternity, and part-time job in advertising for the university newspaper.
I have worked in several settings in a short period of time which has allowed me to appreciate the full spectrum of mental health services From working in the community with different levels of outpatient treatment to emergency, inpatient, and even forensic wards, each setting requires a different method of history gathering, treatment, and decision making. I take a particular liking to patients with anxiety, addiction, and impulse control disorders as I find those the most debilitating. I utilize my collaborative style from consulting to promote teamwork and respectful interdependence in the healthcare world.
At my core I’m a process re-engineer. I have a natural eye to look at redundancies and bottlenecks in processes and excel in developing solutions to streamline tasks. I also enjoy discovering strategies of effective communication and was often positioned in front of client executives on project management status and financial updates. While I switched over to a career in medicine, I continue to cultivate communication skills in all teams with whom I interface.
